The sounds of old jazz music will fill the auditorium at 7 p.m on Tuesday for a free concert with performances by Jazz singers, Jazz 1, Jazz 2, and the Texas Instruments Pro Jazz Band.

“So we have been working on a few pieces of music that we have played for the UT Jazz Festival that we placed 1st at, those pieces are Wind Machine, which is a very fast and technical piece as well as Lisette which was our ballad and we also played a Latin piece called C-Jam Blues which is a really cool mamba type piece,” student Garrett Martin said. “Jazz 1 has been working on a piece by Gordon Goodwind called Hunting Wabbits, and it is a very fun fast moving, sort of cartoon piece.”

In addition to the pieces the jazz bands have been working on, a professional band will be joining for the closing act.

“The Texas Instruments jazz band is going to play their music that they play for a concert coming up and we get to see them, so that is always really fun and exciting, but we have no idea what they will be playing,” Martin said.

The TI jazz band has played with the school’s jazz band previously and wanted to return.

“They were here for the initial year the school was open,” Director of Jazz Band 1 and 2 Diana Williams said. “Paul Westbrook is the director of the TI band and came and performed with our band at the Heritage Ranch Jazz fundraiser and had a blast and approached me about doing a joint concert.”

Jazz singers will be a part of this concert, which is another new addition for the band. Previously the band had only featured one singer, but now they are expanding.

“Last year we had Shelby Johnson, a senior, sing with us during our winter jazz concert,” Martin said. “This year the choir is singing between Lovejoy Jazz Band and the TI jazz band. The choir isn’t singing with us so this will be a little different than usually.”

This year the choir will be joining the band.

“Mrs. Stuard had started this with her group,” Williams said.  “She needed a venue for those kids to perform at so I offered her to come and sing.”

Jazz band members are hopeful the concert will be a fantastic night and encourage everyone to come.

“The singers will be singing two jazz charts at the concert,” senior Connor Huddleston said. “As for the other stuff you should know, you should come!”
